As if every find in the ancient capital of the Jewish nation was not extraordinary, a new discovery might just have the honor of being the find of the decade. When archaeology can turn preconceived beliefs on their head and confirm biblical accounts, it deserves that title and this find has done just that. The relics, a collection of ivory plaques from the First Temple era in unique in that nothing like them has ever been seen before, anywhere in the world.

These Ivories from that holy period are the only ones to be discovered in the world with the level of detail and craftsmanship - and certainly the first of its kind in Jerusalem. They were discovered by the excavations of a parking lot funded by the Antiquities Authority and Tel Aviv University in the National Park adjacent to the walls of Jerusalem.

At the end of a special two-week operation by the Antiquities Authority, the Dan David Center for the Study of Human History at Tel Aviv University, and the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, which was nicknamed "Operation Elephant", archaeologists have retrieved an ancient tusk, which was buried in the ground for hundreds of thousands of years.

Adding to the already vast irrefutable proof of Jewish life in ancient Jerusalem, researchers from the Hebrew University discovered a unique find inside the Jewish quarter of the Old City; in addition to a mikveh, an aqueduct from the Second Temple period, a water pool built by the soldiers of the Roman 10th Legion which Titus tasked to surround the city during the Judean's revolt, as well as a cistern with about 40 cooking pots from the Second Temple period were also found in the excavation.

While construction workers were digging at a site in the Gaza Strip, a security guard noticed a strange stone protruding from the ground. At first, he thought it was a tunnel dug by one of the terrorist members from Hamas, but as it turned out, it was a Roman necropolis from about 2,000 years ago.

Following Operation Guardian Of The walls in May last year, Egypt began a $ 500 million rehabilitation initiative in Gaza. As part of the rehabilitation project in Jabalya, in the northern Gaza Strip, bulldozers dug in the sandy soil to build new structures.

Archaeologists digging at the base of the Legio VI Ferrata Roman Legion near Megiddo have found evidence of the first military amphitheater known in the Southern Levant. While remains of over 230 Roman civilian amphitheaters have been found all over the Mediterranean peninsula, fewer military amphitheaters have been excavated and most of those are in the western regions of the empire.
