IDF Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi giving an update on Sunday (video clip)

Following a stunning assault on Iran's military infrastructure, Israel's Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi hinted that Israel had exercised only a fraction of its full capabilities, signaling both restraint and a readiness to escalate should Iran retaliate. Released on Sunday, Halevi's remarks underscored that the strategic strike, launched in response to Iran's ballistic missile barrage on Israel earlier this month, was only a “preview” of what Israel’s military is capable of unleashing.

“We drew upon only some of our abilities,” Halevi declared, adding that the IDF struck “strategic systems” essential to Iran’s military operations. Halevi’s calm but pointed tone was a reminder to Tehran that Israel stands poised for any scenario, having fortified its defenses and mobilized additional elite units across all fronts.

A Calculated Retaliation: Israel Shows Restraint, Holds Back More Forceful Options

The overnight bombardment reportedly involved around 140 Israeli fighter jets, executing pinpoint attacks on missile manufacturing facilities, launch sites, and advanced air-defense systems. While the scale of the operation was unprecedented, Israel strategically limited the strike to specific military assets, sending a “clear message” that it would not tolerate Iranian aggression but had no interest in escalating the conflict further.  The strikes were seen as preparation for further strikes should Iran continue to attack the Jewish State.

While Israel has hinted that it considered a broader array of targets — including Iranian oil facilities crucial to Tehran's struggling economy — it reportedly opted for restraint after consultations with the Biden administration. Diplomatic sources suggest that the U.S. advised Israel against targeting these economically sensitive sites, hoping to prevent an all-out war that could destabilize the region. The Wall Street Journal reported on Sunday that Secretary Blinken advised President Biden to depoly the THAAD system to Israel in exchange for Israel's commitment to restrict retaliation for Iran's October 1st ballistic missile barrage, to military targets only.

“We know how to reach and hit any threat, in any place, at any time,” Halevi affirmed. The strike, which left Iran scrambling to respond, exposed critical vulnerabilities within Iran's defense network, with some analysts suggesting that Israel has now identified and could easily exploit weaknesses in Iranian airspace.

Iran’s Supreme Leader on the Defensive as Israel Weakens Hezbollah

Even as Israel’s military was calculating its next moves, Tehran appeared hesitant. Reports from Channel 13 indicated that Iran had roughly 200 missiles locked and loaded to fire at Israel but ultimately held back, perhaps due to concerns over the vulnerability of its defenses following Israel’s strikes. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly downplayed the attack, but behind closed doors, sources suggest that Tehran is deliberating over a response that could involve asymmetric tactics, including potential terror strikes against Israeli or Jewish targets abroad.

Adding to Tehran's predicament, Hezbollah — Iran’s primary proxy in the region — has been “largely ineffective” following weeks of sustained Israeli assaults. Israeli airstrikes have systematically weakened Hezbollah's military assets, leaving Iran with fewer strategic options on the ground. Israeli military analysts assert that any attempted drone attack from Hezbollah would be “a drop in the ocean,” a minor provocation unlikely to yield any significant outcome.

Iran’s S-300 Air Defense Systems Compromised, Leaving Tehran Exposed

In a bold move, Israel reportedly targeted Iran’s Russian-supplied S-300 air defense systems, key to the nation’s anti-air capabilities. This strike has not only degraded Tehran’s immediate defenses but also left the nation vulnerable to future incursions, creating an uneasy standoff as Iranian officials assess their next move.

A Defiant Israel Signals Readiness for Escalation as Tehran Weighs Its Options

With Israel’s deterrent power now laid bare, Iran is left in a precarious position, balancing the desire for retaliation with the risks of further escalating a conflict in which it appears militarily disadvantaged. Addressing families of Iranian soldiers killed in the strikes, Khamenei sought to rally the nation, claiming Israel’s “miscalculations” in the assault. However, his carefully measured words suggest an internal struggle between maintaining Iran’s image and acknowledging its weakened hand.

While Iran’s official stance remains ambiguous, Israel’s leadership has made it clear that any further provocation will be met with overwhelming force. As Halevi put it, “We are ready for all scenarios.”
