In a dramatic escalation of the war against Hamas, Israel launched a sweeping expansion of its military operations across the Gaza Strip in the early hours of Wednesday morning, signaling a new phase in the campaign aimed at annihilating the terror group’s infrastructure and permanently securing southern Israel.

Overnight, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) unleashed a relentless wave of airstrikes, followed by heavy artillery fire and the coordinated advance of elite ground forces into the heart of Rafah and surrounding towns. The strikes were described by military sources as “the most concentrated barrage in weeks,” targeting weapons caches, terror tunnels, and command centers deep inside urban areas.

Defense Minister Israel Katz officially confirmed the intensification of Operation “Strength and Sword”, a wide-scale campaign that he said is designed not only to eliminate the operational capacity of Hamas but also to seize and hold critical areas for future annexation into Israeli-controlled security zones—a move meant to ensure long-term protection for Israeli civilians living near the Gaza border.

> “We are not merely responding. We are reshaping the reality on the ground,” Katz declared. “This operation is about crushing Hamas, cleansing the area of terrorists, and establishing the strategic depth Israel needs. The residents of Gaza must now make a choice: expel Hamas and return the hostages—or suffer the consequences of harboring evil.”

Massive Civilian Evacuation Underway

The IDF issued sweeping evacuation orders on Tuesday, warning civilians to flee several zones in and around Rafah. Arabic-language spokesperson Lt. Col. Avichay Adraee issued an urgent appeal to Gaza’s population:

“The IDF is resuming intense combat in your area. We are operating with surgical precision, but we cannot protect those who remain in the crossfire. Move immediately to the designated humanitarian zone in al-Mawasi.”

Despite the warnings, reports from Arab and Palestinian media outlets paint a chaotic scene, with thousands of residents fleeing under fire, while Hamas operatives continue to embed themselves within civilian areas.

Rafah Under Siege

According to multiple Arab media sources, Israeli forces advanced deep into central and eastern Rafah under the cover of heavy bombardment. Military activity has now spread beyond the previously engaged Shaboura and Tel Sultan neighborhoods to encompass new sectors where intelligence indicates the presence of high-ranking Hamas operatives and strategic assets.

The IDF is conducting block-by-block searches for hidden weapon stockpiles, rocket launchers, tunnel shafts, and armed militants. Drones, special forces, and engineering units are working in unison to root out terror infrastructure in densely populated zones.

Gazan medical officials reported at least 21 deaths by 5:00 a.m. local time, while Hamas-affiliated media, such as Shehab, claimed one child was killed in an airstrike in Khan Younis. These reports remain unverified by independent sources.

Hostage Talks at an Impasse

While fighting intensifies, the prospect of a ceasefire appears increasingly remote. Negotiations—mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar—have stalled, with Hamas refusing to agree to the proposed American framework. Under the plan, 11 Israeli hostages would be released in exchange for a multi-phase ceasefire and the repatriation of several hostage bodies.

Hamas has countered with an uncompromising offer: the release of five living hostages over 50 days—one every 10 days—with no commitment to returning the bodies of the dead. Israeli officials rejected the proposal outright, calling it “absurd” and accusing Hamas of playing psychological games with the families of the captives.

“We will not accept piecemeal hostage releases designed to manipulate global opinion while Hamas regroups,” an Israeli official said. “The only acceptable outcome is the full return of our people and the full destruction of Hamas.”

The Road Ahead

As IDF forces press deeper into Rafah and other strongholds in central and southern Gaza, it is becoming increasingly clear that this is not a temporary operation, but a deliberate campaign to alter the strategic equation in the region.

Israel has signaled that it is no longer content with mere deterrence—it seeks victory, territorial control for defensive purposes, and the permanent end of Hamas’s rule in Gaza.

Whether through military might or continued diplomatic pressure, Jerusalem appears determined to reshape Gaza’s future—one cleared tunnel at a time.
