Militant group Jaysh-Al-Islam uses Jerusalem Bombing as guide on how to build bombs

Israelis remain shocked in the aftermath of the bombs set off in Jerusalem this week by Palestinian terrorists. 16-year-old Aryeh Shechopak and 50-year-old Tedsa Tshuma Ben Mada were murdered and 18 other injured, some still in serious to critical condition. Ami Elon, the former head of the Shin Bet, spoke Friday morning with Israel radio host, Nissim Mashaal, about his personal assessments of what to expect in the coming weeks.

At the start of the conversation, he referred to criticism of the Shin Bet and the attack on in the capital: "Any terrorist attack that is not thwarted is a failure. I think the Shin Bet understands this better than anyone else."

“A distinction must be made between individual attacks that are almost impossible to thwart, and planned attacks, the attacks in Jerusalem are no longer individual attacks, they are attacks by an organization. Is it Hamas, Jihad, or any other organization? It's almost unimportant. It's clear that there is an organization, planning, coordination, explosives - there is a system," he continued.

Israeli security typically has an advantage over pending attacks in that their intelligence network usually alerts them to the danger in advance. The fact that two bombs that were classified as the most sophisticated to ever go off in Israel were detonated has led many in Israel to question whether the Israeli security apparatus is as effective as it had been in the past.

Elon touched on the fear many in the country have, saying: "The Shin Bet was not able to prevent it, I think the head of the Shin Bet and the members of the Shin Bet understand this more than anyone else. The role of the Shin Bet is to thwart terrorist attacks, and when the Shin Bet does not thwart terrorist attacks, there is no doubt that something here did not work as we would like it to work.

“For me, this is not the discussion, because I know that the Shin Bet is aware of this, the Shin Bet members know better than anyone else that they have failed. I say this based on the understanding that this news causes the Shin Bet to investigate itself and learn lessons in order to do everything possible to prevent this next time," he added.

After that, Elon was asked if Israel was heading for another period of increased terrorist activities, and he replied: "We are escalating. We need to understand the trend, we see what happened a year ago, three years ago - we are escalating. In my estimation, we are going for a very significant escalation. I don't know if we should call it an intifada.

“Intifada means a popular uprising, it is not violence that has no background. At the moment this is not yet the case. What this means on the ground is very difficult to know, there is a difference between attacks by Al Qaeda or Daesh, the level of cruelty in which is higher than what we have seen. On the other hand, we don't see thousands or tens of thousands on the streets like you would in a popular uprising."
