Minister Ayelet Shaked & Likud Leader Benjamin Netanyahu

Several officials from the Likud party spoke with Israeli reporters yesterday and said, without mincing their words, that former Prime Minister and current Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu is wrong for trying to get Interior Minister Ayelet Shaked to withdraw from the upcoming election. "Netanyahu does make mistakes in managing his campaign and one of them is the conduct involving (Ayelet) Shaked," anonymous Likud Sources have claimed.

"She is his only chance to reach 61 mandates and he is letting (internal) family pressure decide," the sources added, claiming that it is personal considerations and murky relationships that are causing Netanyahu to act irrationally and pressure Shaked to retire.  Netanyahu's son Yair and wife, Sarah have openly criticized Shaked, apparently still angry that the popular firebrand lawmaker defected from Likud ten years ago to run with the 'Jewish Home' party started by Naftali Bennett.

Nevertheless, Likud intends to increase the pressure on Shaked, both through a direct campaign and indirect pressure on her partner Yossi Brodny.  Amid the campaign pressure on Shaked, Netanyahu attacked Shaked while speaking at an event in the central city of Modi'in and demanded no right-wing voters 'slide a ballot in the envelope' with her name on it. In Israel, voters select a slip of paper, pre-printed with the name of the party they are voting for, into an envelope, seal it and place it in ballot boxes in order to register their vote.

Minister Shaked replied to the former PMโ€™s attacks: "Netanyahu, I am the one who built a conservative camp on the Supreme Court, established 14 communities in the Negev, saved the community of Mitzpe Karami, denied citizenship to terrorists and for the first time worked to deport their families, removed a record number of voluntary infiltrators, greatly increased the budgets for Judea and Samaria. I also prevented the defendant's law and the list goes on. It's called more right than right. Netanyahu, your personal hatred endangers the right-wing bloc. Are 5 election cycles not enough for you to understand? The success of (Shaked's party) 'The Jewish Home' is the only chance for a right-wing government."

The criticism of Likud officials comes after polls show that the 'Netanyahu bloc' weakened, with the Likud receiving 32 mandates, dropping the entire bloc to just 59 mandates. In addition, Shaked began a new campaign under the slogan: "Bibi needs a strong Ayelet. Only with Ayelet the right has 63", while the Netanyahu-led campaign claimed that: "Ayelet is not passing, a vote for Ayelet is a vote that will go into the trash." In Israel, if a party does not meet the threshold to enter the Knesset, the votes they do have are not applied to another party.

Among other things, Shaked in her statement said: "Netanyahu, your campaigns and the initiatives you're concocting only make me more determined. You also understand that we have a good chance of passing. So please, don't offer positions, I'm not in politics for that. I only work for the right. Just let go And let it work. You also know that I'm your last chance."
