Amid a global surge in urbanization and the unprecedented challenges posed by climate change, rapid population growth, and resource scarcity, Israel has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative that underscores its resilience and innovation. Despite perceived hostility on U.S. campuses towards Israel since the tragic Hamas assault on October 7, 2023, the bond between Israeli and global academic institutions remains robust. This commitment to collaboration was recently exemplified with the inauguration of NUR (Negev Urban Research), an extraordinary research lab poised to redefine urban development in desert regions.
A Visionary Collaboration
NUR, the first facility of its kind in Israel, was inaugurated by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU) on the outskirts of Beer-Sheva’s burgeoning innovation district. This lab is not just another academic initiative; it is a pivotal node within the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)'s prestigious City Science Network, which spans ten globally distributed labs in countries including the U.S., Canada, Germany, and China.
NUR embodies a synergistic partnership between the City Science Group at MIT, BGU, the School of Design and Architecture at Sami Shamoon College of Engineering, and numerous Israeli government ministries. The lab's mission is nothing short of transformative: to leverage advanced technology to address critical urban and spatial challenges, with a special focus on desert cities like Beer-Sheva.
NUR, Negev Urban Research in Israel, is joining the City Science Network as our newest City Science Lab. We will announce more in the coming months - but first want to share that they are now hiring their Lab Director.

Tackling Global and Regional Challenges
The challenges facing cities today are formidable: extreme climates, diverse and rapidly expanding populations, and limited essential resources. These challenges are acutely felt in arid regions, where urban planning requires innovative solutions. NUR aims to pioneer cutting-edge, data-driven tools and multidisciplinary collaborations to tackle these pressing issues. Through experimental applied technologies, NUR will integrate innovative approaches into significant urban planning initiatives in Beer-Sheva and beyond.
Strategic Location and National Priority
Situated strategically on Rager Boulevard, Beer-Sheva’s central artery, NUR emphasizes citizen participation in urban planning, ensuring that the community’s voice shapes the city’s evolution. This project is a cornerstone of Government Decision 625, a visionary policy focused on the development of the Negev. It operates in collaboration with an array of Israeli government bodies, including the Ministries of Science, Interior, Environmental Protection, and Finance, as well as the National Economic Council.

Global Significance with Local Roots
As part of MIT's City Science Network, NUR joins a league of elite research labs tackling localized urban issues with global ramifications. Its initiatives will explore the development of climate-adaptive regional strategies, redefining the future of desert cities worldwide. This dual focus on local challenges and global opportunities positions NUR as a beacon of innovation for cities in arid climates across the planet.
Leading Voices in Urban Transformation
Architect Merav Idit Battat, the visionary head of NUR, captures the lab’s essence: “The Israeli landscape is fraught with challenges, both global, like the climate crisis, and uniquely local, such as demographic shifts. Through collaboration with our global and domestic partners, NUR aspires to create a future that is more just, sustainable, and innovative.”
Prof. Daniel Chamovitz, President of BGU, echoes this sentiment, stating: “The NUR lab is the embodiment of our university’s DNA and vision. By fostering collaborations with leading institutions worldwide and leveraging cutting-edge technologies, we aim to advance the Negev and deliver tangible benefits to society.”

An Engine for Innovation and Collaboration
NUR stands as a hub connecting academics, engineers, entrepreneurs, designers, government entities, and local communities. Through workshops, conferences, and public engagement, it aims to democratize data and cultivate solutions that resonate with the public’s needs. Its influence will extend far beyond Beer-Sheva, shaping urban planning paradigms across Israel and the globe.
A Testament to Resilience and Vision
The launch of NUR Lab is a testament to Israel’s indomitable spirit and its unwavering commitment to innovation, even in times of adversity. It showcases the power of international collaboration and the potential for transformative change when academia, government, and local communities come together. As the world grapples with the complex challenges of urbanization and climate change, NUR Lab is poised to lead the way, offering a brighter and more sustainable future for cities in the desert and beyond.
