The Ministry of Jerusalem signed an agreement with the Society for the Reconstruction and Development of the Jewish Quarter in Jerusalem, in the amount of a quarter of a billion shekels ($68 Million) for the next five years, to help bring back life to what was once the most central geographic area of the Jewish people.

This is the highest amount of investment invested so far for the development of projects within the Old City. In light of the agreement and for the benefit of the implementation of the plan, the government company for the rehabilitation and development of the Jewish Quarter was announced for the first time as an executive arm of the Ministry of Jerusalem.

Among the goals of the program: The restoration and reconstruction of the Tiferet Israel Synagogue; Construction of the "Western Wall Elevator" which will bridge the height differences between the Jewish Quarter and the Western Wall and make the 142 steps accessible to the masses of disabled visitors; Physical and experiential accessibility of the Herodian quarter and creating accessibility to the ancient wide wall to the visiting public; the development of the archaeological garden and the Davidson Center; Strengthening and developing the Roman market complex, improving development aspects, restoring infrastructure and holding events in the Hurva Synagogue complex as well as holding events and shows and improving the appearance of other sites that exist in the Jewish Quarter for the well-being of residents and the experience of visitors.

Jordan destroyed much of the Jewish Quarter during their occupation of the area from 1948-1967. Apart from 58 synagogues that were destroyed, many ancient Jewish carvings and symbols were destroyed in an effort to 'cleanse' the area of Jewish history. This effort by the Ministry of Jerusalem seeks to help restore some of the items that were not fully demolished.

The director general of the Ministry of Jerusalem, Assaf Yazdi, said: "I am excited to take a part of history and develop the most important area for the Jewish people. The announcement of the Society for the Reconstruction and Development of the Jewish Quarter as an executive arm of the Ministry of Jerusalem and Israel's Tradition, combined with the budget allocated as part of the plan for the development of the Old City basin, will allow us to promote a variety of projects and programs in the area. invites the general public to come and enjoy a variety of sites and activities held in the Jewish Quarter."

The Deputy Director of Jerusalem at the Ministry of Jerusalem, Liron Yiflah, added: "These days we are building the detailed work plan for the Jewish Quarter, which will include investment in strategic projects, as well as pots, and events in the quarter. The signed agreement will allow us to implement the ministry's policy in the region."
