Benjamin Netanyahu meets the Lubavitcher Rebbe (Source: Chabad)

At the weekly cabinet meeting that took place Sunday afternoon in Jerusalem, the Minister of Heritage, Rabbi Amichai Eliyahu, mentioned the birthday of the Lubavitcher Rebbe who was born 121 years ago, in the Hebrew month of Nissan. In his acknowledgement of the day, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu instructed the Minister to work towards the establishment of a unique heritage center for Chabad Chassidim and its activities in honor of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

As a result, In the coming weeks, professional staff will begin work in the Ministry of Heritage to examine the type of content and displays that the heritage center will have as well as scope out its location. After a recommendation from the staff, an official government decision on the matter will be issued.

Prime Minister Netanyahu noted that โ€œthe Lubavitcher Rebbe influenced me a lot and changed the Jewish world all across the board. The Chabad Heritage Center will tell the story of the Jewish people and will surpass the contribution of the Lubavitcher Rebbe who contributed so much to increasing Torah and greatness, and multiplying the love of Israel in the light of Israel's Torah.โ€

Minister of Heritage, Rabbi Amichai Eliyahu added: "As someone who had the privilege of being educated in the educational institutions founded by the Rebbe, with whom my late grandfather had a deep and special relationship, I feel a great privilege and an exciting full closure at the start of this important project. The Chabad movement is a movement that cares for every Jew, regardless of who he is, and the legacy of the Lubavitcher Rebbe is a candle to our feet at every step, we are blessed today that his great light is spread everywhere in the world. Establishing a heritage center that will commemorate the great factory he founded is a sacred duty for all of us."

Chairman of Otzma Yehudit, Minister Itamar Ben Gvir who also attended the cabinet meeting said: "We have the right to work for the establishment of the Rebbi's Heritage Center, which is a symbol and example of love for the Torah, the people, and the land. There is no doubt that his character and his many deeds serve as a point of light for every Jew in the world."

It should be noted that although Netanyahu often expresses his deep connection to the Jewish faith and leading figures within it, he himself is not an observant Jew and in fact, indulges in food items not considered to be Kosher. On his most recent trip abroad to London, Netanyahu and his wife were spotted on a Friday evening at a non-Kosher restaurant, causing some Israeli media personal to express their feelings of hypocrisy on behalf of the Prime Minister.
