Elbit will be scaling up their ammunition production in Israel

In a sign of the times when Israel's longtime allies have been playing politics with weapons and ammunition sales, Israel is becoming increasingly self-reliant for resupplies. Last week, Elbit Systems clinched a monumental order worth $340 million for the supply of various armaments to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that typically woujld have been filled by the United States, United Kingdom or Germany. This deal follows closely on the heels of a massive order from the Ministry of Defense, valued at over NIS 800 million, for the provision of precision mortar bombs of the "Iron Sting" model. The combined effect of these orders underscores Israel's strategic emphasis on maintaining a robust and technologically advanced military.

A New Factory in the Negev: A Game Changer

As part of the $340 million transaction, Elbit Systems will establish a state-of-the-art factory for armaments production in the industrial park it is developing in Ramat Beka, situated in the Negev. This cutting-edge facility, slated to open by the end of the year, is poised to become the central hub for Elbit's production activities. The move is expected to significantly enhance the production capacity and operational efficiency of Elbit Systems, reinforcing Israel's defense manufacturing infrastructure.

Strategic Partnership with the Ministry of Defense

The agreement was formalized by Elbit's President and CEO, Bezhalel Machlis, and Major General (ret.) Eyal Zamir, Director General of the Ministry of Defense. This collaboration marks a pivotal moment in the longstanding partnership between Elbit Systems and the Israeli defense establishment. The decision to build the new factory in Ramat Beka was part of a broader strategy agreed upon with the Ministry of Defense, following Elbit's acquisition of an industrial plant from the state in late 2018.

Responding to Urgent Demand Amidst Conflict

The backdrop of ongoing conflict has heightened the urgency for armaments, particularly 122 mm and 155 mm shells. In response to this critical demand, the Ministry of Defense requested Elbit Systems to continue operations at its IMS production site in Ramat Hasharon, despite initial plans to vacate the premises. To facilitate this, the Israel Lands Authority (RMI) granted Elbit a two-year exemption from heavy fines for not vacating the Ramat Hasharon site. This exemption was crucial to ensuring a steady supply of armaments to the IDF during these challenging times.

Balancing Defense Needs with Development Goals

While the Ministry of Defense's request underscores the immediate need for continued production at Ramat Hasharon, it has raised concerns for the Israel Lands Authority. The authority fears that the extension might delay the preparation of land for sale and the construction of new housing units in Ramat Hasharon. Despite these concerns, the defense establishment views the dual operation at Ramat Hasharon and the new Ramat Beka facilities as essential to accelerating the IDF’s armament process.

A Commitment to Excellence and Innovation

Bezhalel (Butzi) Machlis, President and CEO of Elbit Systems, expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in the company by the Ministry of Defense. He emphasized Elbit's unwavering commitment to expanding its production infrastructure and capabilities to support its customers. "We continue to develop, manufacture, and deliver top-tier technological solutions and products that are combat-proven, to our customers in Israel and worldwide," Machlis stated. This statement reflects Elbit's dedication to maintaining its position as a global leader in defense technology and innovation.

The $340 million ammunition deal with Elbit Systems represents a strategic milestone in bolstering Israel's defense capabilities. The establishment of a new production facility in the Negev, coupled with the continued operations at Ramat Hasharon, demonstrates a robust and adaptive approach to meeting the IDF's urgent needs. As Elbit Systems continues to push the boundaries of defense technology, this partnership underscores Israel's commitment to maintaining its strategic edge in an increasingly volatile region.

This move not only enhances the IDF’s operational readiness but also positions Israel as a formidable player in the global defense industry. The expansion of Elbit's production capabilities is a testament to the country's resolve to ensure its security and maintain technological superiority on the battlefield.
