Antizionist and antisemitic rhetoric online is rising

According to a new study published by the Anti-Defamation League, using the Israeli-based research and survey institution, “Maagar Mochot”, 27% of Israeli teenagers and youth have personally been victims of antisemitism online. According to the study, a total of 81% of Israeli youth encountered manifestations of antisemitism online, both targeting them and the general Jewish public. Only 14% of the respondents indicated that they had not encountered antisemitism whatsoever online.

While examining where the Israeli youth encountered antisemitism online, it appears that 71% encountered antisemitic statements by various people on social media, 66% encountered pages with antisemitic content and 30% encountered fullscale antisemitic websites.

The Israeli minors were also asked about their personal beliefs regarding criticism of the State of Israel. The results show how the Israeli youth view the blurry lines between antisemitism and anti-Zionism. 84% of the youth stated that imposing a boycott on the State of Israel constitutes antisemitism; 88% of the youth said that denying the existence of the State of Israel constitutes antisemitism; only 29% of the youth stated that criticizing the policies of the State of Israel is antisemitism.

Carol Nourial, Senior Director for International Government Relations and Community Engagement in Israel, said: "The data proves beyond any doubt, and unlike before, that the youth in Israel are not immune to the evil effects of antisemitism. If in the past antisemitism was seen as the exclusive problem of Diaspora Jewry, then in the age of social networks and online games, the youth of Israel, who spend a significant part of their time on these platforms, are very exposed to antisemitic attacks.

She further noted that “In view of this, the youth in Israel need to be given tools to deal with antisemitism online. We hope that this hard proof data will encourage the decision makers and the relevant parties to formulate a strategic action plan, with the aim of helping the youth deal with the phenomenon in an effective and correct manner."

Dr. Beatrice Gorawantschy, head of the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation in Israel which also took part in the study’s funding, said in a public statement:  "The results of the survey are shocking and cause great concern. This is a wake-up call for all of us. We see the data as a warning sign, which will only increase our determination to fight even more strongly against antisemitism, and all forms of expressions of hatred and violence. In 1949, Konrad Adenauer described antisemitism as an attack on humanity as a whole.”

What is interesting is the Konrad-Adenauer Foundation is typically anti-Zionist. The Foundation is among the financiers of the vehemently antisemitic NGO MIFTAH, which was founded in 1998 by Hanan Ashrawi, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

On March 27, 2013, MIFTAH posted an article, in Arabic, by Nawaf al-Zaru, who wrote, “Does Obama in fact know the relationship, for example, between ‘Passover’ and ‘Christian blood’…?! Or ‘Passover’ and ‘Jewish blood rituals…?! Much of the historical stories and tales about Jewish blood rituals in Europe are based on real rituals and are not false as they claim; ‘the Jews used the blood of Christians in the Jewish Passover.”

The statement continued, “In our collaboration with the Anti-Defamation League, we seek to inform, expose, explain, shock, show solidarity and stimulate awareness and constant thought on this important issue."
