Screengrab of Kaan News Reporting on Emergency summit in Aqaba, Jordan

A senior Palestinian delegation arrived in Jordan on Saturday to participate in the summit in the Southern Jordanian city of Aqaba that is taking place and includes representatives from Jordan, Egypt, Israel, and the United States, Palestine Liberation Organization member, Majed Faraj, head of Palestinian intelligence, Nabil Abu Rudina, spokesman for the presidency, as well as Majdi al-Khalidi, diplomatic adviser to the Palestinian president, are all part of the PA delegation.

The Palestinian delegation managed to hold talks with senior Jordanian and Egyptian officials on Saturday in preparation for the arrival of the Israelis and Americans. According to inner circle sources, the Palestinian Authority intends to put a number of demands on the table that will strengthen its policing and military capabilities. Among the demands is the introduction of equipment and weapons for the Palestinian police forces, the recruitment of ten thousand new police officers, and the special training of 5000 new recruits. It should be mentioned that Israel and international donors are usually expected to fund PA projects of this kind of volume.

In addition, the terror-supporting Palestinian Authority demands the establishment of a joint operations room with Israel and the US that will prevent Israeli forces from entering Area A without coordination, which, according to the Palestinians negatively affects the status of the PA security mechanisms.

The summit is coming together as part of the American efforts to stop the heated tensions in Palestinian-controlled territories as well as in East Jerusalem ahead of the month of Ramadan and to bring a broad understanding between the Palestinians and Israel. A Jordanian source told an Arab media outlet in Jordan that the Aqaba meeting comes as part of efforts to "stop unilateral measures and reach a period of calm and confidence-building measures, which will lead to more comprehensive political involvement between the Palestinian Authority and Israel."

The source added that the meeting "comes as a continuation of the intense efforts that Jordan is making in coordination with the Palestinian Authority and the other parties to stop the unilateral steps and the security escalation on the part of Israel."

While the efforts to deliver calm are welcomed in Israel, not all Palestinian parties are willing to negotiate with Israel or even sit at the same table with an Israeli. Hamas spokesman Hazem Kassem most recently said: "The brave resistance in the Gaza Strip will always be present to protect our people, as it is the people's shield and sword, and it is following every detail of the Zionist crime against our people and its patience is running out. Our people in all arenas will continue the great revolution despite the massacres of the occupation.โ€
