Israel is set to sell the Arrow-3 missile system to Germany (Image: Israel MoD)

In a sign of the times, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) is on the verge of closing a massive arms deal with Germany, The purchase is estimated to exceed 2.5 billion Euros, making this Israel's largest arms sale. The opportunity comes as Germany has recently made a drastic change to its foreign policy and military policy, one that has not been changed since WW2.

The Russia-Ukraine conflict has put the fear of war in the eyes of German leaders and all of Europe. Until now, Germany has deliberately tempered the presence, and capabilities of the military, a policy that was meant to distance modern Germany from the warmongering country of the previous two World Wars.

IAI is calling the current deal as it stands "the largest in the history of Israeli defense exports." Among other weapons and military technology, is a supply of defensive 'Arrow Missile Systems,' including The Arrow 3. The Arrow 3 system is the embodiment of the IDF’s ethos in a sense, being a purely anti-ballistic missile system it has no offensive capabilities, and yet it is revolutionary, often described as game-changing when it comes to defense.

The Arrow 3 system is an ex-atmospheric interception system, which intercepts ballistic missiles that are outside the atmosphere, and also has the ability to intercept missiles in space. It gives the entire Arrow system the farthest reach with the possibility of identifying and intercepting a threat while it is still very far from its target.

As stated, if signed, the deal will be one of the largest in the history of Israeli defense exports. It is estimated that Germany is dramatically changing its strategy and perception of national security, mainly following the war between Russia and Ukraine and the crisis in Europe.

The release of the details and volume of the current arms deal stands as the primary reasons for all recent official State visits to Germany conducted by Israel, including President Herzog’s speech inside the Bundestag and Prime Minister Lapid’s current visit.

A senior Israeli security official told the Israeli newspaper "Maariv" last week that this 'race-to-arms' phenomenon is felt all over the world: "Defense budgets are doubled almost overnight, many countries suddenly feel threatened, and Israel is flooded with procurement requests of various kinds while taking advantage of our capabilities, experience, and the weapons and defense technology systems we have created."

Israeli industries are now realizing the huge potential that lies beneath Europe’s change of heart when it comes to security measures and defense systems and deals of this nature are likely to become more frequent. Additionally, the new natural gas industry in Israel will join the Israeli-European commerce as soon as Russian gas is disconnected from European Union countries. Many expect this to happen soon as Putin has threatened to shut the Nordstream pipeline that delivers gas to Europe permanently after a summer where it was shit several times for 'maintenance work.'
