The need for the UN presence in Jerusalem ended after 1967's 6-day war

At the UN Headquarters in the Armon Hanatziv neighborhood of Jerusalem, a special ceremony was held to mark 75 years of the presence of UN observers in Jerusalem. Meanwhile, in a letter to the Foreign Minister, the chairman of the โ€œLach Jerusalemโ€ organization, Maor Tzemach, mentions that the UN is operating from there in violation of the law, without paying taxes and in a manner that is serially against Israeli interest. Zemach also calls on the Foreign Minister to promote alternatives to the presence of the United Nations there, a presence that is irrelevant except for its ongoing damage to the Israeli administration in Jerusalem.

"We sent a letter to Minister Eli Cohen, for whom we have great respect, demanding that Israel apply its sovereignty and its law also to the extraterritorial area in Armon Hanatziv," says Tzemach while further noting the UN's unusual control over the place, even though since the Six-Day War there is no longer a need for UN observers to monitor the ceasefire between Israel and Jordan.

"In 1948, the UN observers came to observe the terms of the cease-fire, and they built the place as a strategic place where both sides can be observed, which is not relevant today," says Zemach. "Even from Israel's point of view, it was clear that there was no necessity for their return. This is a site that controls the area and overlooks the Temple Mount, a place with an amazing view, and its control prevents Israeli development of the area, the neighborhoods, and tourism. Israel was careful to define the area as Israeli territory. Today The UN, which received 44 dunams, took over another hundred dunams, more than double what it was given. At first, it was about the area of โ€‹โ€‹the buildings, but the UN took over the area to the east and there they have large garages and large workshops in a large area. There was also illegal construction there that was (ultimately) sanctioned by the High Court in recent years."

"We say that if this is a headquarters that manages the peacekeeping force on the borders of Israel, Syria, and Lebanon, it has no relevance to Jerusalem," added Maor Zemach.

In his words, Maor Zemach points out that the UN headquarters makes sure to hold manpower and supply tenders, but Israelis are not accepted in those tenders. Only Palestinian Authority residents win those tenders. This is also evidence of the attitude that Israel receives from the UN, which gives them even more unclear and unjustified sovereignty.
