Terror In The Jordan Valley (Screenshot: Twitter)

Terrorist attacks in Israel usually take place in a few key areas, such as eastern Jerusalem and certain parts of Samaria. However, the militant radicals remind Israelis from time to time that no part of the state is off-limits. An example of that was the devastating attack in the heart of Tel Aviv earlier in 2022. Another case to study was the most recent attack in Israel’s Jordan Valley.

An IDF soldier was seriously injured and five other soldiers and a civilian were lightly injured after terrorists opened fire on a bus on Route 90, near the settlement of Hamra in the Jordan Valley. A preliminary investigation indicates that the van of the terrorists drove behind the bus, overtook it, and opened fire. In addition, there seemed to have been an attempt to set the entire bus on fire.

The Jordan valley is within what would be defined as the West Bank, but usually is not the main target for terrorists. In recent years the valley made headlines as part of Donald Trump’s peace plan between Palestinians and Israel. Trump’s administration was pushing for the valley to become a Palestinian agricultural territory that would still be supervised on a security level by the IDF.

A Palestinian news agency "Shihab" reported that the terrorists who shot at the civilian bus were Muhammad and Walid Tarhman, cousins and residents of the refugee camp by Jenin.

The spokesman for Hamas, Hazem Kassem, blessed the attack and emphasized that "it is an act of heroism by the young people in the West Bank against the occupation forces and the settlers. The Jordan Valley operation in the occupied West Bank comes against the background of the ongoing reaction of our Palestinian people to the crimes of the occupation, especially against the crimes that are being committed at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, including invasions and desecration of his yards."

Kassem stated that "the operation unequivocally confirms that all attempts by the occupation to stop the acts of resistance in the West Bank will not succeed and that the resistance is ready and developing."

Kassem added that "the operation confirms the complete failure of the Zionist security system, which said that there are only a few areas and outposts that bear witness to the resistance's actions, but this time the operation arrived in a place that the occupation did not expect. Our people can renew their efforts and tools in places that the occupation does not expect and cannot stop. We are facing a new phase in the West Bank, the title of which is the continued escalation of resistance operations, in all its forms against the occupation and its settlers, and it will not stop until our goal is achieved."

A Senior medic, Mati Karmi, who was one of the first responders at the attack site said: "We saw outside the bus 2 gunshot victims being treated by the IDF medical force and people who were there. One of them is a man about 60 years old and the other is younger. They were fully conscious and communicated with us. In addition, they brought us two young men who were injured by broken glass. We gave them medical treatment and transferred the two wounded from a gunshot to a Medical helicopter that landed nearby and evacuated them to Rambam Hospital. The wounded were evacuated in our ambulances to the Emek Hospital in Afula."
