Israeli Forces Are Now Using Armed Drones In The West Bank (Photo: IDF)

Recently the West Bank has been getting more military attention due to an alarming increase in terror-related activities within the area. Due to the population density, it is almost impossible to navigate Israeli fighter jets throughout the scattered villages, and that is where armed drones enter the frame.

In a series of operations that took place recently in Nablus and Jenin, armed drones carrying missiles were already flying above the ground forces. These tools have not yet been used, but a spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces says they will be used when operational necessity calls for it and when that happens, the drones and the forces controlling them will be ready.

The manner in which the IDF uses these drones was only recently declassified and allowed to be published. This is a change in the way the IDF uses firepower in Judea and Samaria, and the ground forces have been trained to use these new tools under severe restrictions with the primary factor being a 100% certainty that civilians will not be harmed.

The rationale for employing these weapons is to give security forces an upgrade in firepower within Judea and Samaria to the same levels permitted when it comes to combatting terrorists within Gaza. To the naked eye, this action may seem like an unnecessary act of aggression, but the recent rise of terrorist activities has made it necessary to stem the growth.  Jenin, in the Northern West Bank is rapidly becoming a hotbed for terror planning. The situation has gotten so bad in the Palestinian Authority-controlled city that some Palestinian security forces refuse to enter the city.

This week alone, four men wanted for terrorist activities were arrested in Jenin. The arrests were made by undercover Border Police officers who had infiltrated the city posing as locals. The special police unit, made famous by its portrayal in the acclaimed Television series "Fauda," operates in strict coordination with the IDF. One of the suspects who tried to escape was shot in the leg before his arrest. During a search of the house where the suspects were staying, a weapon and additional magazine were seized, in addition to two homemade pipe bombs, and two, fully stocked military vests.

Prime Minister Lapid noted during the most recent cabinet meeting that: "At the end of last week we held discussions with the IDF and the Shin Bet on the tensions in Judea and Samaria, and especially in the Jenin and Nablus sectors. The security forces are working in these areas with determination to prevent terrorist attacks spilling over into Israeli territory."

Some analysts have warned that Jenin and its nearby neighbor city of Nablus (known in Israel by its biblical name, Shechem) are spiraling so fast and deep that they run the risk of becoming a new Gaza. If this happens, where crude missiles are fired from the area, it would put a significant portion of Israel's population at risk. Most of the country lives in the center and should the West Bank 'resistance' morph into a more organized group, it could put the majority of the country within reach.

The inclusion of armed drones, while new, is seen as a necessity to help the security forces stem the rise of extremism in the area. AS the Palestinian Authority has failed in its role of keeping the peace in these cities, it is left to the Border Police and the IDF to root out not just terrorists, but common criminals as well.
