In a move that underscores the volatile situation in the Middle East, a long-range missile launched from Yemen penetrated Israel’s airspace before being intercepted, with pieces of the ballistic missile landing in an open area in central Israel early Sunday morning. The attack triggered a series of air raid sirens, including at Israel’s bustling Ben Gurion International Airport, sparking panic among travelers and residents. Although initial reports indicated no casualties, the incident is a stark reminder of the increasing boldness and reach of Iran-aligned Houthi rebels.

As the missile roared across Israeli skies, the Iron Dome and Arrow air defense systems sprang into action, with explosions from interceptors heard throughout the region. One particularly alarming sight was a fragment from a missile or interceptor that ended up on an escalator near a major shopping center on the outskirts of Modi’in, close to the headquarters of The Judean. It is believed that the Arrow 3 projectile missed the missile, enabling it to enter Israeli airspace, where the Arrow 2 system kicked in to destroy it before it reached its target, Ben Gurion airport.

Video footage aired on Israeli media captured the panic as passengers at Ben Gurion Airport dashed towards safe rooms, and others took cover in trains, underscoring the palpable fear gripping the public as Israel faces an ever-expanding range of threats.

Military Response and Regional Implications

In response, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated, "Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in central Israel, a surface-to-surface missile was identified crossing into central Israel from the east and fell in an open area. No injuries were reported." Despite this reassurance, the presence of missile fragments in central locations suggests potential gaps in Israel's air defense capabilities, raising concerns about the robustness of Israel’s protective measures.

This attack comes on the heels of a deadly incident in July when an Iranian-made drone launched by the Houthis struck Tel Aviv, resulting in one death and ten injuries.
