Mahmoud Abbas speaking at the United Nations

Mahmoud Abbas or Abu Mazen ( father of Mazen in Arabic) is the current leader of the Palestinian Authority and the de-facto “President of Palestine,” having been elected only once, fourteen years ago to a four-year term. Despite the obvious corruption behind his holding of office, he is seen by the entire world as the legitimate leader & negotiator on behalf of the Palestinian people and often is invited to speak at global events, including numerous United Nations summits. What is often ignored and most would never be able to tell based on his current status, is that Abu Mazen is a highly-educated, world-class terrorist who is worth more than a billion dollars, somehow.

Abu Mazen was born in the historical Israeli city of Safed in 1935 during the British Mandate for Palestine. He grew up knowing and living with Jews in the country and land of his birth, he did not know another reality. In 1948, during the Israeli war of independence Abu Mazen heeded the Arab League's call to evacuate the land and fled the violence along with his family to Egypt.

Abu Mazen went on to receive his law degree from the University of Damascus, later receiving the equivalent of a Ph.D. in “sciences” from Soviet Moscow’s top university. In 1982 he completed his thesis which he decided to title “The Other Side: The Secret Relationship Between Nazism and Zionism." Just 37 years after the horrific images of emaciated survivors were released to the entire world, Abu Mazen saw it fit to compare the Jewish State to Hitler’s Germany.

From an early age, Abu Mazen had a flare for the very seeds of the Palestinian cause led by infamous terrorist and leader, Yasser Arafat. He became involved in the underground Palestinian political scene in oil-rich Qatar and in 1961 joined the terrorist organization Fatah. His Qatar years connected him with wealthy Arabs, these relations he maintains till this day, relations that have made him and his extended family living anywhere but Palestine very wealthy.

Through his involvement in Fatah, Abu Mazen took part in countless acts of terror against Israeli citizens on a global scale, including the Munich massacre in 1972, which was orchestrated by him along with other leading Fatah personnel at the time. Five Israeli Olympians were killed along with six Israeli coaches and 1 West-German police officer by a group called “Black September”, which took orders from Fatah.

Throughout the late 1980s, the Palestine Liberation Organization a non de plume of Fatah ran an extensive and impressive public relations campaign. The results were staggering with the PLO’s entrance to the liberal world stage that loved the ‘oppressed people’ narrative. Abu Mazen at this point in his timeline served as the right-hand to Yasser Arafat and was an aide to other known terrorists. The PLO incited local Arabs in the aftermath of Jordan formally ceding control of Judea & Samaria, often called the West Bank, in 1988 and by most accounts is directly responsible for inspiring the first intifada. That conflict is what began the cycle of violent rioting behavior in Palestinian nationalism, its effects are diverse and felt to this very day with recent headlines drawing a similar image of what took place over 3 decades ago.

In the later years of Arafat leading up to his death, Abu Mazen took a more prominent role and slowly became the face of the PLO through his leadership role in Fatah. It is worth noting that the reason Abu Mazen and Arafat often clashed during Arafat’s final years, stems from Abu Mazen’s desire to take control of the entire Palestinian global representation. Abu Mazen’s rise to the leadership role in Fatah also did not come easy, there were preferred options according to many sources, but Abu Mazen was the only one not incarcerated for acts of terrorism at the time.

In 2005, with most of the other candidates being self-defined Islamist extremists and with full control of the Palestinian media apparatus, Mahmoud Abbas became the President of the National Palestinian Authority. Under pressure from international actors after Hamas had violently taken over the Gaza strip, he was forced to hold elections to determine his legitimacy. That was the only election he participated in and most analysts say the results were questionable.

Throughout his 14 years as president, Abbas and his family have been accused numerous times of corruption. Most famously in 2012, Abbas and his sons were shamed in a speech given by Elliot Smith, an expert on foreign relations who served under President Reagan and President George W. Bush. Smith in his speech delivered to the US Congress, claimed that “as an American official seeking financial assistance for the PA from Gulf Arab governments, that I was often told ‘why should we give them money when their officials just steal it?’"  Yasser Arafat, who spent his life building up the PLO, died with an estimated 8 billion dollars in his bank. His wife, a Roman Catholic born in Nazareth, and daughter who was born in France, live in Europe. How Arafat made his billions is a question no one can answer, however it is thought most if it came from UN organizations such as the Relief Works Agency as well as foreign governmental aid meant to build Palestinian infrastructure.

Somewhere along this brief history of the Palestinian leader through the information that is all available online, global leaders decided Abu Mazen is a legitimate leader with a real nation behind him that is struggling. Not only have global powers come to this conclusion, but some Israeli leaders have as well.

It is usually what happens when an entire cause is rooted in terrorism, a better of two evils is picked to represent the others. If only diplomacy was based on facts and not well-paid actors who play the never-ending game of appeasing others, the world and the Palestinian people would be in a better place.
