Stuffed Cabbage At Sanders On Levinsky Street Is Divine

Rosh Hashanah is the golden time of year for delicatessens and home restaurants in Israel. In the last decade Israeli society and the entire west have become spoiled with a new notion: why cook and burn the house down, if one can order delicious food without getting up from the couch?

That is where the old-school “Sander” restaurant becomes relevant again, offering classic homemade Jewish food that will make others wonder how many long hours were spent in the kitchen cooking.

The story of "Sander" begins long before its establishment: father David Schreiber, who was a partisan in World War II and fought against the Nazis. He learned how to survive during arguably the toughest time to be a Jew in Poland.

One thing David did not know was, how to cook. He developed unique ways to steal food from the Nazis in creative ways. After immigrating to Israel, he joined his friend Alexander Sander, and with the announcement of the establishment of the state in 1948, the two opened a restaurant in Jaffa.

Chef Sander, who passed away many years ago, started preparing traditional Jewish-Polish food that any Ashkenazi-rooted Jew should be familiar with. In 1960, the restaurant was moved to the outskirts of the Levinsky Market in Tel Aviv, while preserving the tradition of modesty that characterized the place: small and intimate tables and a simple design that includes a wall of photos of the great leaders of the nation throughout the generations.

When Sander retired, Schreiber replaced him in the kitchen, and in 1989 he was replaced by his son, Zami, who still cooks the traditional recipes to this day.

Those who have longed for the traditional dishes that have become a stereotype of Jewish food will find it all at "Sander". A dark, rich, and velvety Cholent, a real chunk of Kishka, genuine Chopped liver (as opposed to the minced pate kind). Even the egg salad has the flavor of a Jewish Grandma’s kitchen with hints of Schmaltz. Last but not least, kugel, lots and lots of kugel.

“Sander” is offering bundle packages for the upcoming Jewish high holidays that include all the special delicacies. They recommend pre-booking orders due to their limited capacity and high demand.
