Mahmoud Abbas giving his scathing Nakba spech at the UNGA

The Palestinian Authority marked the 75th anniversary of the ‘Nakba’ Monday afternoon at the UN General Assembly, just a few days after the "Shield and Arrow" operation. The focus was on the speech of the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, who among other things, condemned Israel for the killing of terrorists and compared the Jewish state to specific Nazi figures while promising to remember all the martyrs who died while trying to harm Israeli civilians.

"The decision on marking the Nakba, after years of ignoring the event, indicates international recognition of the event, and opposes the Zionist narrative that denies the Nakba," said the President of the Palestinian Authority in his speech. "Israel, the occupying power, continues its aggression against the Palestinians and continues to occupy the territories of Palestine. Certain powers are silent today in the face of Israel's actions and refuse to hold Israel responsible for annexing and occupying the territories, by building settlements between them and violating the status quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque."

Abu Mazen, as Abbas is known in Israel & Palestine, also said: "The most important conditions that must be met in order to achieve sustainable peace in the region are recognition of the Palestinians' right to self-determination in accordance with the 1967 borders. East Jerusalem is part of Palestine, and I call for the release of all Palestinian prisoners, including children and women. We are not opposed to Jews and Judaism, but resisting the occupying forces. I proudly salute our martyrs, our prisoners, and the wounded and their courage. We will never leave them behind, no matter what the challenges are."

In summarizing his remarks, the President of the Palestinian Authority, who has already made controversial statements in the past related to the Holocaust and the Nazis, compared Israel's policy to Joseph Goebbels, who served as propaganda Minister in the Nazi administration. “Palestine was a desert and they turned it into something shiny, heaven on earth. They act like Goebbels: lie, lie, lie, eventually people will believe you," he said.

Prior to Abu Mazen's speech, dozens of countries around the world canceled their participation in the event that took place at the United Nations following Foreign Minister Eli Cohen's directive to the Israeli delegation to the United Nations and Israel's embassies around the world, for intensive diplomatic activity in all capitals. Among the countries that canceled their participation are the US, Canada, Great Britain, Ukraine, Austria, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Uruguay, Georgia, South Sudan, and Micronesia.
