Elbit systems Autonomous Truck Mounted Ordinance System (ATMOS)

"Roem", the first automated cannon that entered the Israel Defense Forces arsenal in months and next year will replace the outdated "Dohar" self-propelled cannon, was presented last month to representatives of the British, German, Dutch, and Hungarian armies, as part of a bidding process and to be equipped with new cannons.

The new Israeli cannon is considered one of the major projects of the defense establishment led by the Ministry of Defense and Elbit Systems, LTD, and still, most of its components, including its internal documentation, are considered classified. Israel has a limited number of its prototypes, and one of them received initial adjustments for potential foreign customers who were impressed by its capabilities up close in the field of fire of the Shivta IDF artillery base in Israelโ€™s Southern District.

Elbit personnel fired dozens of non-explosive shells that simulated different types of rounds in an open area. According to the Elbit company, the demonstration was a success in terms of hitting the targets, but above all the fast autonomous capabilities of the Israeli cannon were also demonstrated in this demonstration, and the autonomous connection of the explosives to the shell according to the specific fire mission, robotic loading of the turret and not by a soldier, aligning the barrel to the targets by the computerized firing system and a rate of fire of at least eight shells per minute; far beyond the rate of fire in the old cannons.

In the demonstration, the shooting was carried out to a range of about 20 kilometers, but in practice, the shooting ranges could be far greater. The cannon will have armor for the crew that will operate it, and the European version will have different shells and a slightly different future barrel in development that will be able to reach ranges of about 80 kilometers. The geometric structure of the turret in the European version of the Israeli cannon will also be different, but its technological and operational core will remain the same as the original used by the IDF.

The Israeli cannon, even in its version proposed for Europeans, will move on wheels and not on caterpillars and will therefore be faster in getting from place to place. In recent weeks, the IDF cannon underwent field trials in difficult areas. Even in the European version of the cannon, it will be operated on top of a 20-wheel truck, but of a different model, and will be able to travel by train as well, for rapid movement over distances of hundreds of kilometers in Europe, and accordingly, also travel inside tunnels.
