hezbollah fighters in mock takeover of Israeli cities May 22, 2023

Israel submitted an official complaint against Lebanon to the UN Security Council and the Secretary-General following the military exercise conducted by Hezbollah with the participation of 700 terrorist operatives in which a scenario of an invasion of Israel and kidnapping of citizens was practiced.

Israel's ambassador to the UN Gilad Erdan said: "We demand that Lebanon exercise its sovereignty on its territory, implement the decisions of the Security Council and prevent Hezbollah terrorists from turning Lebanon into a terrorist base. Hezbollah's provocations will lead to devastating results for the entire region. The Security Council must immediately and strongly condemn Hezbollah and Iran."

Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, submitted an official complaint against Lebanon to the UN Secretary-General and the Security Council, following the military exercise conducted by Hezbollah, which is a blatant violation of Security Council Resolutions 1701 and 1559. The exercise that the organization carried out in southern Lebanon included scenarios of crossing and infiltrating Israel, taking over Israeli outposts, and kidnapping soldiers. "Israel expects and demands from Lebanon to take control of what is happening in its territory and act to prevent terrorist groups from arming themselves, planning and carrying out terrorist attacks against Israel," the complaint reads.

Ambassador Erdan added: "I demand that the Security Council strongly condemn Iran and Hezbollah for destabilizing the region and demand that the Lebanese government fulfill its obligations to implement Council Resolutions 1701 and 1559." Erdan also clarified in the letter that "Israel will take all necessary measures to protect its citizens and its sovereignty."

According to the report in the Lebanese Al-Mayadeen network a number of weeks ago, Hezbollah carried out a limited attack maneuver in southern Lebanon that ended in the practice of "invasion of an Israeli settlement and capture of prisoners". It was also reported that the maneuver also included the use of "unmanned aerial vehicle weapons simulating an attack on Israeli settlements".

The head of Hezbollah's Executive Council Safi A-Din said during the drill,  "We say to Netanyahu and his gang, we watched your ability and your helplessness in the events of the new equation in the 'Revenge of the Freedom Fighters' system [Operation Shield and Arrow in the Gaza Strip]. Netanyahu gasped but failed."

A-din, who spoke at the event, referred to Operation Shield and Arrow, in which Hezbollah did not intervene while Israel killed senior members of the Islamic Jihad and attacked the organization's infrastructure in the Gaza Strip. In his words, he alluded to the Israeli statements regarding changing the equation.
