The moment an airstrike took out a building in Rafah (video clip)

Israeli airstrikes in the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah have resulted in the deaths of at least five individuals. These airstrikes are part of a series of attacks on Hamas strongholds that have escalated as Israel prepares for a more extensive offensive in the area. Rafah has become a refuge for over half of Gaza's population of 2.3 million people amidst ongoing conflict and is viewed as the likely hiding spot for Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar as well as many of the hostages.

Simultaneously, the central region of Gaza witnessed the deaths of four individuals due to Israeli tank shelling at Hamas rocket launch positions. Hamas still has the ability to fire rockets and has been showering nearby Israeli communities since the start of Passover Monday night.  The city of Sderot which has only recently seen displaced residents return after the October 7th massacre, was bombarded by dozens of short-ranged rockets and mortars from the Central Gaza Strip.

Amidst these developments, a senior Hamas political official has proposed a significant shift in strategy. The official suggested that Hamas is ready to agree to a ceasefire lasting five or more years and transition into a political party, contingent on the establishment of an independent Palestinian state based on pre-1967 borders. Despite this, the likelihood of Israeli acceptance appears minimal given its firm stance against the establishment of such a state and its commitment to neutralizing Hamas.

The backdrop to these events includes a substantial commitment from the United States, with President Joe Biden signing a $95 billion war aid bill, which allocates about $9 billion for what is called "humanitarian assistance" to Gaza however critics of the bill argue that Hamas rules Gaza with an iron fist and as demonstrated with the humanitarian aid that has been coming in each day, the terror group takes control. This effectively means that the United States is funding both sides of the conflict, and giving significant resources to Hamas to rebuild their terror infrastrcuture.

This conflict, which has intensified since the unprecedented Hamas-led raid into southern Israel on October 7th—resulting in more than 1,200 deaths, mostly civilians, and the abduction of about 250 people—continues to escalate. The ongoing warfare has claimed the lives of thousands of Palestinians, with Israeli estimates showing close to 15,000 militants have been killed.

In light of these tragic developments, the international community's calls for restraint and diplomatic engagement have grown, emphasizing the urgent need for a sustainable resolution that ensures security and peace for all parties involved.
