Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has emphatically stated that Israel will maintain its vital presence on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon until a new arrangement guaranteeing Israel’s security is established. Mount Hermon is situated in the northernmost region of the Golan Heights and commands an unparalleled vantage point over the tumultuous Syrian landscape, it is divided in two with one part being within sovereign Israeli territory and the other in Syria. The Israeli side is often referred to as the “Eyes of Israel” as it enables Israel to see deep into Syria and most of Israel. Netanyahu's statement was made on the Syrian side, and was taken as a sign that Israel will remain there for the foreseeable future.
