The United States and Israel are fortifying their defenses amid heightened tensions with Iran. The recent assassination of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran has ignited a series of strategic moves, signaling a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East.
Last week marked a pivotal moment in Israel's defense capabilities with the successful trial of the LRAD interceptor. Fired from the formidable INS Atzmaut, a Sa'ar 6-class corvette, this advanced missile system showcased its precision by targeting a simulated "strategic maritime asset" — likely a gas production platform, given the Sa’ar 6 ships' role in protecting Israel's vital offshore resources.
The LRAD, a key component of the Barak MX system, boasts an impressive range of 70 kilometers. In the face of an imminent aerial threat, this state-of-the-art interceptor is poised to be deployed in combat for the first time. A professional insider revealed to "Globes" that the LRAD's interception costs surpass those of the David’s Sling system, estimated at around $700,000 per use. This elevated cost is attributed to the interceptor's advanced naval components and sophisticated interception capabilities.
🙌🏽 The Israeli Navy recently completed a successful test of an LRAD missile, which is part of the BARAK MX air defense system. The missile was launched from a Sa’ar 6-class corvette. The LRAD's efficacy extends across a spectrum of threats, including manned aircraft, UAVs, cruise missiles, rockets, and shore-to-sea missiles. This versatility is crucial given the varied arsenal possessed by Iran and its proxies. The recent trial involved collaboration between the Israel Navy, the Ministry of Defense, the IDF’s Directorate of Defense, Research, and Development ("MAFAT"), and Israel Aerospace Industries, underscoring a unified approach to national security.
US Forces Amplify Presence in the Middle East
In a parallel move, the United States is bolstering its military presence in the region. White House national security communications adviser John Kirby emphasized the necessity of enhanced capabilities following Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei’s vow to avenge Haniyeh’s death. The US's strategic response includes deploying F-22 Raptor stealth fighters, an aircraft renowned for its advanced technology and restricted availability to other nations. Each F-22, valued at $350 million, represents a formidable addition to the US arsenal, with operating costs of $68,000 per hour.
Further reinforcing the region, the US Navy has intensified its deployment of ships equipped with ballistic missile interception systems. Deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh announced the replacement of the USS Theodore Roosevelt with the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group. Additionally, ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers are being dispatched to US European Command and US Central Command areas, alongside preparations for increased land-based ballistic missile defense.
The Sa'ar 6-class missile ships declared operational during the recent war, feature a comprehensive air defense system. The 'Barak MX’ system, developed by IAI, includes a radar capable of detecting, classifying, and intercepting a range of threats with the 'LRAD' interceptor.

To augment air support, an additional fighter squadron has been ordered to the Middle East, complementing the existing capabilities of the USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group / Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Israel’s Comprehensive Air Defense Array
Israel's sophisticated air defense network is designed to counter an array of threats. The Arrow 3 and Arrow 2 systems, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries, form the upper echelons of this defense, targeting ballistic missiles both above and within the atmosphere. Rafael’s David’s Sling and Iron Dome systems provide lower-layer protection, demonstrating their effectiveness in recent conflicts.
The maritime domain is equally fortified with the C-Dome system, a naval adaptation of Iron Dome, installed on Sa’ar 6 corvettes. This system has proven its mettle by intercepting UAVs and cruise missiles, safeguarding Israel’s economic waters. Rafael spearheads the development of C-Dome, with Elta, an Israel Aerospace Industries subsidiary, providing the crucial Adir radar, and mPrest delivering the command and control software.
A time critical capability in C-Dome has shown its effectiveness in two recent operations. In the last week, 2 separate interceptions prevented hostile UAVs from threatening Israel’s economic waters. As the specter of conflict looms, the unwavering resolve of the US and Israel stands as a testament to their commitment to regional stability and security. The deployment of cutting-edge technology and strategic military assets highlights a robust defense posture, ready to counter any aggression from Iran and its allies.
