What borders for Palestine does Bambos Charalambous endorse?

The Labour Party in Great Britain, the main opposition party in the country, has officially announced that if it wins the next election and replaces the current conservative-led government, it will recognize Palestine as a state and work to accomplish its agenda. Considering that the Palestinians publicly identify their future state as encompassing the entirety of Israel, however, what the Labour Party considers a state has not been defined

This was announced by the party's shadow minister sitting on the opposition responsible for the Middle East and North Africa, Bambos Charalambous. In a speech at the annual conference of Labour's Jewish organization, Charalambous said that the move was necessary in order to accelerate dialogue about the two-state solution and find a solution for the Palestinian people.

"Obviously it will happen if and when Labour comes to power," Charalambous said. "Hopefully this will help start some kind of talks between the parties on a two-state solution. Because right now nothing is happening." Charalambous added that the state of Palestine has been recognized by over a hundred countries, and claimed that this approach was part of the party's platform in the past as well. In response to his words, a senior member of the Jewish organization called on the party to reconsider its immediate recognition policy, before there is an actual negotiation.

It is also unclear why exactly Charalambous decided to declare his intentions in front of a largely pro-Israel Jewish crowd, making his move in the eyes of bystanders seem like political suicide. Calculated speculations assume that perhaps the reasoning behind his statements was to appeal to the growing Muslim population in Great Britain. According to a recent census, study reported globally, Great Britain no longer has a Christian majority and is slowly moving towards a Muslim one.

Charalambous also referred to the new Israeli right-wing government, and claimed that he fears that Israel is in a situation where the religious Zionist parties "do not even recognize Palestinian rights". The shadow minister also mentioned the demonstrations in Tel Aviv that took place Saturday night against the "undermining of the legal system" by the new government. No Israeli diplomat or politician has responded to the Labour partyโ€™s intentions of undermining the Zionist ideology.

After much political turmoil in the UK, it seems the Conservative-led party has managed to secure its throne. The next UK election will be held on January 25, 2025, and after many years of Conservative control and general support for the Jewish state, the Labour party will try to bring about a turnaround and return to power.
