As the sun rose, Israeli tanks rolled into position, not only dominating the crossing but also marking their territory right on the Palestinian side—effectively sealing it off.  Hamas had tried to stop the offensive which was sparked by a rocket attack from Rafah that killed 4 Israelis, but their effort by seeming to agree to Israeli demands failed to stop the operation.
