Like all living beings on Earth, the days are numbered for Mahmoud Abbas, known in the Arab world as Abu Mazen. His semi-tyrannical grip on Palestinian politics and the Palestinian Authority since Yasser Arafat’s passing has been taken for granted by the Israeli government which sees him as a fair negotiating partner, in comparison to other, largely terrorist, leaders. However, according to many Palestinian and Israeli public opinions, his rule marked a period of great corruption in the PA-controlled territories. His advanced age and reported deteriorating health expose mixed feelings for all affected by him who on one hand are appalled by his corruption, but on the other fear what’s next; and for good reason.

If you were scrolling through social media during the World Cup games tournament in Qatar, the existence of a Palestinian team and perhaps even a Palestinian victory would visually be almost factual. There were barely any games in which a PLO flag was not seen, and pro-Palestinian Instagram and TikTok accounts celebrated the victories of Morocco and Saudi Arabia as if it was Palestine who had defeated Portugal and Argentina.

The peace between Jordan and Israel is a farce. The agreement that Prime Minister Rabin signed with King Hussein on October 26, 1994, was meant to usher in a new normal where cooperation between the two nations would flourish. Instead, Jordan continues to vote against Israel in almost every sham United Nations vote, bashes Israel for defending itself whenever missiles from Gaza fly, and in one of the most egregious examples of how there really is no peace, allowed a Jordanian-born terrorist who proudly helped kill 15 civilians, including 8 children and injure 130 Israelis, rise to fame in their country.

Political turmoil has been the case in Israel since its foundation. From the early days, when the ruling social democrat “Mapai” shunned the capitalist revisionists, to Menachem Begin’s famous victory in 1977. Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination resulted in a temporary de-escalation in political tensions, but division remained and has gained new momentum in recent years with Netanyahu’s latest term along with the Haredi and religious nationalist parties.

Today,  shortly after the fifth election in less than 5 years, Israeli division is slowly creating sub-factions within its society that refuse to recognize the underlining consensus that has glued them all together, Jewish self-determination and Zionism.

Although there is rarely consensus on anything about Israel, the common narrative on Israeli independence seeks to embellish an initial pro-Zionist stand by the United Nations, that gradually decreased due to “occupation” and alleged violations of human rights. Despite the UN voting in favor of a Jewish state, from the very first year of Israel’s existence, the world body demonstrated a clear anti-Jewish and anti-Zionist bias.

Naturally, the United Nations Relief & Works Agency's (UNRWA) creation is testimony to early UN sympathy towards Arab refugees who fled before and during the war of independence, but specific resolutions from that era expose just how unjust and perhaps antisemitic the UN was and still is.
